Ending the MMA for good.
The Music Modernization Act (2018) is the most serious attack made against the copyrights of artists everywhere. With it, more than one thousand lawsuits against streaming corporations were swept aside. This act demands each released musical recording be permitted for sales by streaming corporations—or any other corporation that choses to sell them. How is this possible at all? The law gives “price setting” for music’s recordings to a circle of three judges that are somehow supposed to work out of the United States Copyright Office. It doesn’t get worse than having the government set prices for music. This arrangement is only found in music—and only because of billions of dollars in revenue generated by music sales. It’s time to cancel the MMA fully. By doing that, we can restore full copyright protections to artists in music.
